Great problems have simple solutions.

So, in the last few weeks I had to make a choice, between buying a new laptop for my belloved or giving her my old, but very good Acer Timeline laptop and buying for myself something smaller. I took a look at many options but somehow I my mind remaind on the iPad, allthough I am the adept of the ideea that all the Apple products are way to expensive. But, due to the fact that this week Apple will lounch for sale the new iPad 2 , I found the iPad one at good price and bought it.
I did made some research on the web to see if the iPad will satisfy my needs, with are to be able on the moove to have access tonthe internet instantly and be able to access different comeputrs through remote controll or Vpn, this next to the need of e-mail, witch anyhow I have on my mobile.
Beeing a critical person, I will not talk about the good things that this device has, because you can find them on the official page.
So, let’s cut to the subject. First fizical impressions was nice, like with any other Apple product. Second impression, not so nice, because I found out that you can not start the iPad for the first time without beeing connected to the iTunes
second bad thing I found is that this particulary iPad came with a US outlet plug. Third bad thing is that it dosen’t charge the battery when connected to the USB.
The rest is Apple. It works fine, looks nice, great battery and display. The touch keyboard it’s verry good. I bought the 16Gb model with a 3G wich was verry easy to set up on the Vodafone network.
I will stop here because it late, but if you have any questions about this device feel free to comment on this post.
So let’s make a short review about a laptop that is not very well-known in our country among the normal people, not that the whole MAC concept is…
The Mac in question is the old MacBookAIR (not the new 11” model) with a Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86Ghz processor, 2Gb of RAM and a 120GB SSD hard disk .
So it happened that a client of mine asked me to install Windows OS on it because he wanted a light weight laptop to carry arround but he didn’t want to have anything to do with the Mac OS… although I consider this a blasphemy, I did it because I always do what my customers ask me to
So I did a little research and got on with it. First I must say that even if Mac is supplying you with BootCamp for partitioning your disk, it doesn’t make the new disk partition ready for a Windows installation. So after partitioning your drive you must format is NTFS from the Windows setup menu. Another inconvenient is that you can not make 2 partition tu use under Windows like I use to, one for the OS and other one for my data. This is because if you sum up the system reserved partition, the Mac OS and the Windows system partition, you reach the number of partitions allowed to creat on one drive
Moving on, let’s go to the part when Win is ready to go. First thing I notice is that none of the hardware present on the MBA is not recognised so I go a little bit further on my research I on the Apple support site they say ” insert you Mac CD and install the BootCamp. I look up in the box of the MBA but what do you know, there is no CD!!! they have only supplied me with a USB stick that has only the OS on it for reinstalling tha Mac OS. It’s ok I say to my self, I’ll just go online and download the BootCamp from there. So I went to the Apple support page and found available for download Boot Camp 3.2 . I download it, run install and got the message ” You need BootCamp 3.1 in order to install the 3.2 version” . OK, so I go back online on the support page and find out that there is no BootCamp 3.1 available for download
This is the part where I find myself in need of some torrents
luckily I found the 900MB BootCamp 3.1 version for download
Moving on, again, I install the BootCamp 3.1, update it to 3.2V , and what do you know, it still doesn’t recognise the motherboard, power management, keyboard, video card…. and so on. At least it does work, soured off…
To be honest it does work fast, probably thanks to the SSD hard drive. It takes a while untill it boots up but it works ok. A big problem is that it doesn’t want to wake up after the laptop goes to sleep so you need to do a hard reset
Another big problem is that because it does not recognise the power management, you can not set it when to sleep, and the laptop fans go wild randomly, and because of that the battery life is significantly shorten. Will all these problems, in my opinion even the hardware life will be shortened if using Windows because it can not manage the power and does not make a correct reading of all his sensors from the motherboard.
Now to say a few words about the laptop itself I must say that his main plus is the weight. This morning I put it in my laptop bag,in place of my personal 14′ Acer Timeline, which is not heavy, and the bag seamed empty
Another plus is the battery life under Mac OS. It stays up and working with the wireless on for about 8 hours, easy. I think that if you do only web browsing and dim the display light to the minimum it could work for 10 hours without problems.
A few thing I don’t like at this model is that it has no optical drive, no wired ethernet board and it doesn’t have that nice Apple illuminated keyboard.
So please, pc-laptops manufacturers, build and light weight reliable 13” laptop, so that, us IT technicians will never have to install Windows on a MAC, because it hurts our souls
These been said, I look forward to the opportunity of testing the NEW 11” MacBookAIR
I recently bought for a client a Juniper Secure Service Gateway 5 which costs about 800$. For those who do not know what this is, is a more powerful router for your local area network that provides all kind of services, similar with the 30$ router you have at home. The reason for this 800$ router is that it can protect you from the dangers on the internet and many more features that a home router can’t have and off course it spouse to be more reliable.
Well, what my dissatisfaction is right now is that I had to install this SSG5 on a client outside the city. So I bought this equipment, drove to my client and so that this new SSG5 doesn’t work at all. After a few hours of rebooting and testing I gave up and come home with the thought that I will had to go again on my own expense to the client to try to install it again.
After talking to a friend of mine that works with this kind of equipment I found out that before installing it, I would have had to upgrade its fimware. Sad and done, after upgrading the firmware, the SSG5 worked. And this is the first dissatisfaction for me. How it’s possible to pay 800$ and not have the latest firmware installed? And this is just the first part of the problem, because after I went the second time to install the equipment I’ve encountered another problem that does not allow me to set multiple VPN tunnels. The problem consists in the fact that when trying to set a value, you save the setting and if you return to check that setting, you find out that it didn’t save it. I tried numerous methods but nothing, so now I’m a little lost, because I cannot reset the equipment to set it from zero because now my client is using it and I can not stop his activity…. so what now? 800$ for what?! when I coult ask for a VPN connection from my IPS and had no bother….
Well it’s not just another Mac review. I call it that because many people made reviews on this subject, but beside this, I will try to express only my personal impression about the… NEW 15′ MacBook Pro equiped with an 2,4 Ghz Inel Core i5 processor, 4GB DDR3 memory, NVIDIA GeForce GT330M with 256MB, and …. well, all the other functions that a normal Mac has, expect those Air models, wich I don’t know what where they invented for… the AIR models are just like an expensive jewelry that your friends can see, but it can’t do more that a smart phone, or an iPad?… patato – potato… sorry, I forgot what I was talking about….
So, getting back to the PRO model, the first impression when opening the box was as great as every Christmas. Tha Apple packaging always amasses me
Moving forward…. for someone who had a Mac before, the design will not impress you so much, not that is not ok, just that is the same…
at least I was not impressed. Now that I think about it, nothing really impressed me in the first 5 minutes of configuring and using it, because it was exactly the same as the other models. So I’ve started to think, why pay so much? Because you have to admit tha the price is at least double in comparison with a laptop that has the same tech specs, from another manufacturer. And after 10 minutes of setting up and personalizing, I started to have a nice feeling, one that I had before, and then I’ve realised! It was the feeling that I had the last time when I’ve used a Mac
I don’t know how do they do it, but they CAN make you forget how much you pay on it, because it’s so user-friendly that you what to “play” on it 24/7. I know it sucks for our lady friends… so?
As a recommended optional, you can opt for the non-glossy screen, in case you’re not a narcissist and you like seeing your face all the time on the reflective screen
Let’s not forget that you will not have to see blue screens, viruses and stuff like that, and if you really need to use a Windows-based app, this Mac has enough resources to install a VMware on it.
The only thing that didn’t pleased me, was the weight. 2.2kg, or something like that. Personally consider that too much to carry in a bag everyday. My personal laptop has about 1,1 kg, and even with that weight, after about an hour of walking through town, I fell the wight on my shoulder. This is a powerful laptop not so much perfect for a day-to-day mobility.
So, if you have the money, and you’re not just surfing the web and living on Facebook, this is the tool for you. It’s a great investment.
PEACE
